Choosing Bathroom Tile: Porcelain, Ceramic, Stone
Tile is the decision people spend longest on and know least about. Four material questions and one number decide almost everything worth deciding.
Tile showrooms are organised by appearance, which is the least useful way to organise them. Two tiles that look identical can behave completely differently in a wet room, and the differences are all recorded on a specification sheet nobody reads.
The materials, honestly compared
Porcelain does most of the work in a modern bathroom, and deservedly. It is fired at higher temperature than ceramic, which produces a denser body with very low water absorption. It is hard-wearing, needs no sealing, and modern printing means it convincingly imitates marble, travertine, concrete and timber. If you are unsure, porcelain is the answer.
Ceramic is softer, more absorbent and cheaper. It is perfectly good on walls, where nothing walks on it, and it cuts more easily, which occasionally matters on intricate work. It is a weaker choice on floors and a poor one on a shower floor.
Natural stone, marble, travertine, limestone and slate, is genuinely different from anything printed, because the variation goes through the material rather than sitting on the surface. The commitment is maintenance: stone is porous, needs sealing periodically, and marble in particular etches when it meets anything acidic. Etching is not a defect, it is chemistry, and someone who cannot live with a patina should not put marble in a bathroom.
Glass and mosaic are accent materials. They are beautiful in a niche or a band and they are expensive to install across an area, because the labor scales with the number of pieces rather than with the square footage.
Large-format porcelain slabs, the very large thin panels, are increasingly used on shower walls to eliminate grout lines almost entirely. They are impressive and they demand specialist handling, a very flat substrate and experienced installers. Worth asking specifically whether a crew has done them before.
The one number that matters on a floor
DCOF stands for dynamic coefficient of friction, the measured slipperiness of a tile when wet. The industry benchmark for interior floors expected to be walked on wet is 0.42 or above.
It appears on the specification sheet, not usually on the display. A polished marble-look porcelain that looks superb on a wall may be well below 0.42, and the same collection will usually offer a matte or textured finish that clears it comfortably.
This matters most on a shower floor, which is the wettest, soapiest surface in the house and frequently the one people specify last. It is also the strongest argument for small tile or mosaic on a shower floor even when large format is used on the walls: more grout lines mean more texture underfoot.
Format, and why large took over
Large-format tile means any edge of fifteen inches or more, and 12 by 24 is now close to a default on shower walls. The reason is grout. Fewer joints means a calmer-looking wall, less to clean and fewer opportunities for staining.
The trade-offs are real:
- The substrate has to be flat. A large rigid tile cannot follow a wavy wall, and lippage between tiles is far more visible at this size. Older houses with framing that has moved often need the walls corrected first, which is a real cost that appears in the quote as preparation rather than as tile.
- It needs the right mortar. Large tile requires a mortar rated for it, not general-purpose thin-set.
- It suits a linear drain. On a floor falling toward a centre drain, a large tile has to be cut into pieces to follow four planes, which defeats the purpose.
- Small rooms. The old advice that small rooms need small tile is backwards. Fewer grout lines make a small bathroom read larger.
Grout, trim and the details
Grout colour changes the look more than most people anticipate. Matching the tile makes the surface read as one plane; contrasting it makes a graphic pattern of the layout. Both are legitimate, and it is worth seeing samples wet, because grout darkens.
Epoxy grout is effectively non-porous and highly stain resistant, costs more and is less forgiving to install. It earns its place on shower floors and heavy-use surfaces more than everywhere.
Silicone, not grout, at every change of plane. Wall to wall, wall to floor and around the perimeter of a tile field all move slightly, and grout in those joints cracks. Flexible sealant there is not a shortcut, it is the correct detail.
Edges. Where tile stops, something finishes it: a metal profile, a mitred corner, or a bullnose piece. Metal profiles are durable and read as deliberate. Mitred corners look best and take skill. Deciding at the quote stage avoids improvisation on site.
Order extra. Ten to fifteen percent over the measured area covers cuts, waste and breakage, and leaves a few spare pieces in the garage. Dye lots vary between production runs, so matching two years later is often impossible.
What tile costs installed here
In this market, labor for standard porcelain runs roughly $15 to $30 per square foot installed on top of the material, which itself spans from a few dollars to well over fifty. Natural stone costs more to install: heavier, less forgiving, often needing sealing before and after setting. Small mosaic can approach double the porcelain rate because labor tracks the number of pieces.
Large-format tile costs more per piece but installs faster, so the net often lands close to standard porcelain, minus whatever substrate preparation the flatness demands.
